WereWolves (in Twilight), are common and (descend) when vampires come to the town of Forks. (All we know is that WereWolves exist in Forks.....Well, actually, La Push...) The Wolves come from Quileute Tribes. Wolves turning into men used to be just a legend to the tribe, but that changed when it turned to reality for a group of Teenage boys in La Push. Their job is to protect their city or little 'area' as you could call it, of Vampire attatcks. Back When Jacob Black's great-granfather met the Cullens, they were ready to kill them. The Cullens, fortunately, convinced the 'Pack' that they were different from other vampires, Thus, the Treaty came into action. The Cullens are now, not allowed onto The Quileute's territory. These WereWolves do NOT need a full moon to phase. THey can phase whenever they want, although (as discovered in Breaking Dawn), These 'Dogs' are not full-blown Werewolves, they are shape-shifters that just coincedently come out as a wolf. When the wolf gene gets triggered, you get "One hell of a growth spurt." (-Jacob Black) And in a few months you become fully (physically) grown and stop ageing.

Quileute Tribe History

"La Push above, 12 miles from Forks Washington is home to the Quileute Tribe. According to legend, the tribe was created from wolves by a supernatural transformer. The tribe's lineage stretches back thousands of years to the Ice Age, making them possibly the oldest inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest."

Beliefs of the Tribe

credit: Wikipedia
"The beliefs of the Quileute People changed over time. They originally were a very spiritual people. The boys would go on quests to find their supernatural power once they reached puberty, if they wanted to. They would perform the first salmon ceremony to ensure a good season. They had shamans and healers and many legends and monsters that they believed in. One example of a legend is their creation story. It says that a traveling shape shifter came upon a wolf and transformed him into a man, creating the first Quileute. They believed that each person had their own guardian and they would pray to it, along with the sun and Tsikáti (the universe). Much of their original religion was lost and forgotten after the Americans came. James Island, an island that you can see from First Beach, has played a role in all aspects of Quileute beliefs and culture. Besides being used as a fortress to keep opposing tribes out, it was an integral part of the beliefs of the tribe. It was used as a burial ground for chiefs, and once held a lot of spiritual power within the tribe."
